Windows 7 and Vista Install error: DVD driver missing

Postby Boundinashes6 » March 23rd, 2011, 8:28 am

Hello, I am having some issues getting Windows 7 and Windows Vista to install correctly on USB SARDU.

The error I am getting is as follows: "ERROR: A required CD/DVD drive device is missing. if you have a adrive floppy disk, CD, DVD, or USB flash drive" ONLY when installing windows vista

Here is what i have done so far:

I have tested both ISO files of Windows 7 AIO and Windows vista AIO on a virtual machine with no issues.
I have burned and installed both Windows 7 AOI and Windows Vista AOI from a DVD without issues.
If i only create SARDU for USB with only Windows Vista, everything is fine. Same for Windows 7

What i have found:

When SARDU extracts the install source folder from the ISO files it places them into 2 folders : Windows 7 = sources and windows Vista = sourcev.

If i rename the windows 7 source folder to sources7 and the vista folder to sources, Vista installs without a problem but windows 7 is then plagued with the same exact error message.

I tried to edit the BCD files with a program called visualbcd but the BCD files seems to be referencing the correct folders for the respective operating system.

I am stuck now and I'm not sure what the issue could be. Any help would be appreciated !

p.s Thank you for all your hard work so far ! SARDU is amazing :D

The Vista's BCD of SARDU points to the folder SOURCEV

Correct , but for whatever reason, if i rename the SOURCEV folder to SOURCES and change the windows 7 SOURCES folder to lets say: SOURCE7, vista installs perfectly fine but windows 7 gets the same exact error message that vista did, which is where I'm confused. It seems like something is still pointing to the default SOURCES folder windows uses to install and doesn't like it when the folder is named something other than SOURCES.

i've tested this theory on several computers in my home and different flash drives as well.

thanks in advanced!

I have had the same error when installing Vista from Sardu USB. XP installs ok problem is only with Vista & possibly 7 (will need to test further)

Try renaming the folder "Sources" on your flash drive to something like "Source7" and the "SourceV" folder to "Sources" and try to install vista and let me know if it succeeds.

Without renaming the folders.
WIndows 7 installation appears to go OK - I did not completely install as it allowed me to choose the type of installation, Upgrade or Custom.
Windows Vista installation failed with above CD/DVD error.
Renamed folders Sources (3.5GB) to Source7 and SourceV(2.8GB) to sources
Windows 7 installation gave me the Vista installation routine without CD/DVD errors and I did not completely install as it allowed me to choose the type of installation, Upgrade or Custom.
Windows Vista Installation did not give me the CD/DVD errors and I did not completely install as it allowed me to choose the type of installation, Upgrade or Custom.

I would agree that there is a naming issue as the sources folder works fine irrespective of whether it has the 7 or vista sources....

Thanks for testing my theory IceK, now all we need to do is find what is pointing Windows to install from the sources folder and not a custom folder. It may be the Boot.wim inside the respective sources folder or something else, I will investigate more after work today. :)

Try with this method.

MiKM wrote:Hi,
great piece of software, btw!

I had trouble booting into Windows 7 installation discs, too. Tested with Win7 Ultimate Retail RTM x86 amd Win7 Ultimate Retail SP1 x86.

Changing <USB-DRIVE>\menu\pe.cfg file from

#Install di Win 7
label Boot von Install Win 7
menu label Boot von Install ^Win 7
MENU INDENT 1
COM32 /chain.c32
APPEND boot ntldr=/bootmgr

to

#Install di Win 7
label Boot von Install Win 7
menu label Boot von Install ^Win 7
MENU INDENT 1
COM32 /chain.c32
APPEND fs ntldr=/bootmgr

fixed the problem to me! According to syslinux-Wiki chain.c32 fs seems to further address the partition.

The drive from which Syslinux is booted can be referred to with the parameter:

boot

The drive and partition from which Syslinux is booted can be referred to with the parameter:

fs
