[SOLVED] Problems adding Windows 7/XP recovery disks.

Postby tankman986 » May 25th, 2011, 11:30 pm

First, thanks for making and updating this program - it's been a huge timesaver for me.

I've been having some problems with adding Windows 7 recovery disks and the Windows XP recovery console to my new USB disk as of last week. I tried downloading and using SARDU v2.0.2c, and I see several errors along the lines of "Error: cannot find the archive specified" and "The system cannot find the file specified" in the logs whenever I try to add these. (For some reason, the Vista disks work just fine.) For what it's worth, I think that there's a problem with the script that's extracting the files.

This is odd, though, since when I tried doing this 3 weeks ago (with the exact same files, no less) with a different USB drive, there wasn't an error and it worked just fine. I've tried reformatting both drives as FAT32, I've tried using an older version (2.0.1) and the beta (2.0.3 beta3), and I've tried running the program as an administrator as well as in compatibility mode. The only thing I can think of is that my old drive was 8GB and my new drive is 32GB.

One other thing, while I'm still sober enough to spell: How, exactly, do I add a version of, say, Windows XP Home x32 that I made (as an ISO) that has a bunch of stuff slipstreamed? I get that you have to add a few things to the extras.cfg file (menu entry, kernel location, etc.), but after that I'm totally lost, and I don't know where to put any of the files.

Do you try to reformat the usb stick with RpmPrepUSB?
In my test XP Recovery don't works fine, neither the original (Real PC, VirtualPC works fine).
Installer of Vista and Seven are alternative.
The usb stick of 32 bg can be the problem but i don't know.
For customized version for me that's impossible know folders, paths, rename the paths, edit the CFG etc.Doing this you can undestrand the difficulty to make one software like SARDU, edit hundreds of files etc :)
Let me know.

Okay, thanks for getting back to me so quickly. I used RMPrepUSB to format the 8GB USB drive and then tried SARDU on that drive. I'll PM you the log file.

(In summary, the Vista recovery disks worked just fine, but the XP Recovery Console and the Windows 7 recovery disks failed just like they did before.)

Would it be possible for you to post a copy of the extraction script so I can take a look at it? There's a chance that I might just need to rename a few files.

You use this rc? WindowsRC=http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
You use Windows_7_64-bit_Repair_Disc.iso and Windows_7_32-bit_Repair_Disc.iso downloaded here? http://neosmart.net/blog/2009/windows-7 ... air-discs/

In my tests all works fine. Try to make a scandisk of your unit with folder ISO.

I don't use script for extract files, i can support only standard files, not customized. :(

Success! I reformatted the 8GB USB drive again using RMPrepUSB, redownloaded the files from the links you gave me, used a freshly-extracted SARDU 2.0.2c, put SARDU in a folder on C:\, and then moved the ISOs into the default ISO directory and used that. Not sure which one of those steps was the key, but it works now, and the log shows no errors. Thanks for your help!

One last update: I tried adding my modified version of XP Home to the ISO folder and renaming it, and SARDU successfully added it to the USB drive. It boots cleanly, installs cleanly, and I just used it to reinstall XP onto one of my computers. This is the kind of ease of use that I was looking for when I chose SARDU, and I thank you again for making this program available.
